“This album is exactly that, a tribute to the music and the people that have influenced me and the people in my life that I’ve had to say goodbye to…”

Dat het nieuwe album van JOE KROWN de titel ‘TRIBUTE’ kreeg, is geen toeval. Het is, aldus Krown: “precies dat, een eerbetoon aan de muziek en de mensen die mij beïnvloed hebben en de mensen in mijn leven, waar ik afscheid van heb moeten nemen…”. Het is een album met drie eigen nummers en covers van o.a. Allen Toussaint (1938-2015) en Malcom John (Mac) Rebennack (1941-2019), aka Dr. John, ook bekend als Dr. John Creaux of Dr. John the Night Tripper. Het zijn niet toevallig twee muzikanten, pianisten en zangers/songwriters uit New Orleans (Louisiana), die in hun muziek veel blues, R&B, boogiewoogie en rock-'n-roll combineerden. Toussaint was muzikant in de formatie van Dave Bartholomew en begeleidde de grootste artiesten, zoals Fats Domino. James Carroll Booker, bijgenaamd "The Piano Prince of New Orleans", "The Bayou Maharadjah" en "The Black Liberace" is hier de derde aan New Orleans-gerelateerde pianist, waarvan Krown ook “Classified” speelt. Hij werd ooit door Dr. John gekscherend beschreven als "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced…" (de beste zwarte, homoseksuele, eenogige junkie-pianogenie die ooit uit New Orleans is voortgekomen). De stijlen die Booker speelde varieerden: hij speelde rustige stukken in het jazz-genre maar ook rock. Hij creëerde een aparte stijl door zijn akkoorden op een monotone manier te spelen en dan te verdelen door een lagere toon in de baslijn. Naast dit alles had hij ook een krachtige stem. Hij werd sterk beïnvloed door o.a. Professor Longhair en Ray Charles.

Joe Krown is zelf ook pianist en songwriter en woont ook in de omgeving van New Orleans. Zijn pianostijl is New Orleans’ getint en daarnaast speelt hij ook op Hammond B-3 orgel. Sinds 2001 treedt Krown ieder jaar op tijdens het New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival en sinds 1998, jaarlijks tijdens het French Quarter Festival. Krown won in 2004 de New Orleans Big Easy Award in de categorie “Blues”. Zijn trio met Johnny Sansone & John Fohl won deze award in 2004. Het Joe Krown Organ Combo met de legendarische Walter “Wolfman” Washington (1943-2022), won de award in 2009 en in datzelfde jaar ook de Offbeat Award in de categorie “Best R&B/Funk Album”. In 2014 ontving Joe Krown een Piano Legacy Award en sinds 2017, toert hij regelmatig wereldwijd als pianist/organist met de Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band.

Voor ‘Tribute’ werkte Joe Krown in de opname studio samen met Mark Brooks (bas + staande bas), drummer Doug Belote, gitaristen John Fohl & Jack Miele en percussionist Michael Skinkus. Kassie Netherland verzorgde netjes de achtergrondzang. Op de tracklist staan acht instrumentals en drie vocale nummers: Sam Hopkins’ “Feel So Bad” door NO-legende Walter “Wolfman” Washington, “Such a Night” van Rebennack door Ivan Neville en Allen Toussaint’s “With You in Mind” door Noah Hunt, de zanger van de Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. De overige gasten zijn gitarist Leo Nocentelli van de originele NO-supergroep The Meters die te horen is op Toussaint’s “All of It”, de instrumentale opener. Mondharmonica fenomeen Jason Ricci en saxofonist Joe Sublett (Phantom Blues Band) doen hun ding op “Something on Your Mind”, een Jay McNeely nummer. De overige instrumentals zijn de originals “Ode to Mr. Davis”, “Tribute to Fess”,  Rebennack’s “Dorothy”, Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” & de wervellende originele afsluiter, “Gumbo Boogie”.
